Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a public research university in Germany that is one of the country’s largest educational institutions as well as the largest research institution in terms of financing. KIT is among the top public universities in Germany and It was formed in 2009 when the Institution of Karlsruhe (Universität Karlsruhe), a public research university founded in 1825 and commonly known as the “Fridericiana,” united with the Karlsruhe Research Facility (Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe), a national nuclear research center founded in 1956. (Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe, or KfK).
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is a member of the TU9, an association of the largest German universities of technology. It was one of the three universities that were given the status of excellence in 2006. In 2019, KIT was named one of eleven “Excellence Universities” in Germany’s “German Excellence Strategy.” KIT is one of Germany’s and Europe’s major technical institutions, having created the first German faculty of computer science in 1972. KIT is the German institution with the strongest research in engineering and natural sciences, according to various bibliometric rankings.
