About University

The University of Victoria or UVic is a government university in the Canadian towns of Oak Bay and Saanich. The university may be traced back to Victoria College, which came into existence in 1903 and was the first post-secondary institution in the province of British Columbia. In 1963, it was reincorporated under the name University of Victoria Canada. Ocean Networks Canada’s deep-water seabed observatories, NEPTUNE and VENUS, are running at UVic. It also houses the sole degree program in Indigenous law in Canada as well as specialized research institutes for environmental and indigenous law. The 403-acre campus is about 7 kilometers north of Victoria’s city center. UVic also maintains an off-campus study center at the Jeanne S. Simpson Field Studies Resource Center in Lake Cowichan.
