University Postgraduate Award (UPA)
University Postgraduate Awards (UPAs) are a stipend that aims to cover some living expenses.
The UPA is for Doctoral and Master of Philosophy candidates only and is only available at the University of Wollongong. The University of Wollongong has a limited number of UPAs allocated based on merit each year.

Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship

Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship students must;
- I am commencing a new coursework Master’s degree at UOW (Australian campuses only) in 2024, excluding Doctor of Medicine, Nutrition and Dietetics, Exercise Physiology, Teaching, Social Work, and Psychology degrees.
- have excellent academic results (75+ WAM or equivalent)
- be an international student
- not receive any other scholarship, sponsorship, bursary, or discount
- Achieve a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 50 for each session of enrolment
Graduate Certificate + Master package offers are not eligible for the scholarship
Joint Postgraduate Scholarships Program
International Postgraduate Tuition Awards (IPTAs) are available to cover international HDR students’ tuition fees in certain circumstances.
IPTAs can be available in three different circumstances:
- Full Course IPTA
- Final Session IPTA
- Financial Hardship IPTA
Full Course IPTA
International students who get a stipend scholarship (equivalent to the value of the current UPA stipend) will also get an offer to a Full Course IPTA to cover their tuition up to 4.0 EFTSL for Doctoral degrees and 2.0 EFTSL for Master of Philosophy degrees.
Final Session IPTA
Available to international students seeking a final session IPTA to complete their thesis. A Final Session IPTA also applies to international students who have accrued an EFTSL (Equivalent Full Time Study Load) of >4.0 for doctoral degrees and >2.0 for Master of Philosophy degrees, classifying them as overtime in their studies. Students should consult their supervisor regarding a final session IPTA and provide evidence that they are near completion of their thesis. If the supervisor supports the claim, s/he must submit an application to the Graduate Research School on or before the relevant session’s due date.
Financial Hardship IPTA
Available to international students seeking an IPTA for one session due to financial hardship. Students should consult their supervisor regarding a financial hardship IPTA. Also, they should provide full details of the economic circumstances that make them unable to pay fees. If the supervisor supports the claim, s/he must submit an application to the Graduate Research School on or before the relevant session’s due date.
